About the Film
A while after moving from Turkey to Germany in 1963 as a guest worker, Nermin takes her three daughters that she has entrusted to their fathers back with her. Her granddaughter Didem, born to her oldest daughter, is a documentary director born in Dortmund. Finding out that her grandmother is losing her memory, Didem decides to visit her. With camera in hand, she embarks on a train from İstanbul to Germany, as her grandmother and the other immigrants have done. This train journey turns into a journey in time. As the missing pieces come together, a portrait of Nermin in her years as a woman guest worker begins to appear. Living in Stuttgart, Nermin is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Starting out from the director’s personal history, Bitter Sweet presents a subjective approach to the notion of migration.
