About the Film
This Is Not Me tells the story of a group of unhappy gay men who hide their sexual orientation and marry women due to societal and family pressure and their own inner conflicts. Mustafa, Mehmet and Yusuf are three gay men from conservative families, who have migrated to the metropolis of İstanbul from small cities and towns. Depicting the suffocating world of the characters where they are tired of lying and pretending, where they are lost between their real and imagined lives, the film also conveys to the audience the victimization of women. In their conservative family circles, Mehmet and Yusuf are heterosexual family men. But in their inner worlds, they are passionately in love with their male lovers and they experience their own reality only in this parallel world. Mustafa, the driving character of the film, is Mehmet’s boyfriend of 15 years. Mustafa defines Mehmet as a “homophobic homosexual.” In the film, we see Mustafa as he tries to leave this passionate yet traumatic relationship behind. But Mehmet is not willing to let go of Mustafa.
