About the Film
Filmmaker Daniela Muñoz Barroso, who is almost completely deaf, wants to discover the identity of the remarkable musician Mafifa, who has become a legend at the bell, an instrument women typically cannot play on the Cuban street orchestras (conga) due to its weight. As she follows the traces left behind by Mafifa, who has died at an early age, her quest leads her on the trail of an enigmatic woman, and also makes her question her own head and heart.
Progressing with masterful sound design and candid voice-overs, this journey makes the audience just as curious as the director to get to know Mafifa, who performed her music without paying attention to the macho environment around her. Illustrating that women’s heritage can transcend space and time, Mafifa is a creative documentary on the invisible bond formed between two women after many years.
