Sonne

About the Film
A video filmed by three young girls of different ethnicities living in Vienna, in which they dance to R.E.M.’s Losing My Religion wearing hijab, makes them famous, especially among Muslim Kurds. Yesmin, the only Kurd in the group, begins to distance herself from her own culture, while Natia and Bella seem fascinated by a world that is alien to them.
In Sonne, director Kurdwin Ayub, who immigrated to Austria from Iraq during the Gulf War, examines a range of current issues about identity and belonging, along with social media culture. Winner of the GWFF Best First Feature Prize at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival and produced by Austrian director Ulrich Seidl, Sonne promises audiences a subtle and entertaining coming-of-age story.
